Abstract
Problem-Solving Therapy is a psychosocial intervention that focuses on the client¡¯s ability to deal with a problem and is geared to foster a positive orientation to problem solving and enhance problem solving skills. Since Thomas D¡¯Zurilla and Marvin Goldfried suggested a model of problem-solving training, PST has been revised several times based on the extant treatment-outcome literature, and advances in psychology and neuroscience. The latest version of PST is termed the Contemporary Problem?Solving Therapy. This article describes the basic theory of PST and changes and introduces the refined theory and therapeutic strategies of Contemporary PST. For more than 40 years, PST has been applied in a wide variety of populations and clinical problems. The purpose of this article is to review the PST outcome research and the implications associated with the outcomes. PST has been demonstrated to be effective in decreasing distress and improving the quality of lives of individuals who are suffering from a variety of emotional distress, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation and health problems, including cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Lastly, the feasibility of PST and suggestions for future research are discussed.
